Following successful joint inspections in various provinces across the country, the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) continued with its unannounced sting operation in the towns of Ermelo and Bethal, Mpumalanga Province, to intensify its nationwide enforcement to combat the influx and distribution of illicit products in South Africa.
This intensified enforcement campaign directly supports the NRCS’s annual performance plan 2026–2027 which sets ambitious targets including conducting more than 15 joint inspections nationwide and removing or correcting over R3.3 billion worth of illicit goods within a period of a year.
These efforts align with the NRCS’ core mandate to protect human health, safety, the environment, and to foster fair and competitive markets.
The spectrum of seized products covers vital sectors of the economy including electrotechnical goods missing certification and safety markings; automotive safety equipment that fails compulsory standards; chemical, mechanical, and material products that do not meet safety regulations; and food products with inaccurate labelling and health compliance failures.
During these raids, thousands of non-compliant products were confiscated, with an estimated value of R6m. Removed products range from air fryers, fans, butchery scales, toilet paper, building materials, plastic carrier bags, paraffin stoves, safety footwear, paraffin heaters, chemical disinfectants, canned fish products and frozen fish, hairdryers, to electric massage machines.
These products were found to be in contravention of the NRCS Act, Act No. 5 of 2008 and the Legal Metrology Act, Act No. 9 of 2014, thereby posing risks to consumer’s safety, public health, and the environment.
The NRCS remains steadfast in enhancing market surveillance, deepening collaboration with law enforcement and border authorities, and engaging proactively with industry stakeholders to raise awareness and build capacity around compulsory specifications and compliance responsibilities. Consumers and businesses are encouraged to report suspected non-compliant or unsafe products to the NRCS, joining the collective effort to safeguard public health and uphold fair trade.
Stakeholders present during the operations included the Mpumalanga Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (DEDET), the National ConsumerCommission (NCC), the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Credit Regulator (NCR) to mention just a few.
Through these comprehensive, intelligence-driven enforcement efforts, the NRCS reaffirms its commitment to upholding the highest standards of product quality, safety, and fairness, ensuring that only compliant goods reach South African consumers, protecting livelihoods, and reinforcing the foundation for a competitive and sustainable economy.
