National Youth Day 2026 theme focuses on legacy of 1976 and new opportunities for young South Africans
As the nation commemorates Youth Day tomorrow, 16 June 2026, Government says it remains committed to the legacy of the 1976 youth uprising by expanding education, skills and job opportunities for young people. This year’s theme, “RESET@50: The Future Calls!”, reflects 50 years since the Soweto uprisings while calling for renewed investment in youth empowerment.
Building a capable state that enables youth to prosper is a top government priority, officials said yesterday. Key focus areas include education, skills development, entrepreneurship and employment.
Through the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention, young people are being assisted to gain workplace experience, in-demand skills, entrepreneurship support and access to sustainable jobs.
Government has also expanded programmes such as the Expanded Public Works Programme, Community Work Programme and Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator. These initiatives continue to create work and skills development opportunities across the country.
Young people have been urged to join the National Youth Service Programme to gain experience, serve communities and contribute to national development.
