A few financial lessons every young woman should know, from one woman to another

Let’s be honest: being a woman in your 20s can be expensive. Between keeping up with your skincare routine, booking your next hair and nail appointment, paying for data, contributing at home, showing up for birthdays, weddings, or baby showers, and still trying to build a future for yourself, your salary can disappear surprisingly fast.

And that’s before you even think about saving.

As we mark the end of Women’s Month, I’ve been reflecting on how differently financial independence looks for women today. Many of us are building careers in an economy where unemployment remains high, opportunities aren’t always guaranteed and financial responsibilities often extend beyond ourselves. So, consider this a girl’s guide to navigating money in your 20s.

Lesson 1: Your first salary isn’t the finish line

Getting paid for the first time feels incredible. Then your debit orders humble you. Transport. Groceries. Rent. Subscriptions. Family commitments. Very quickly, you realise that earning money and managing money are two completely different skills.

One of the best things you can do is understand exactly where your money goes each month. Financial confidence starts with awareness. Tools like My Advisor on the FNB App can help you better understand your spending patterns and identify opportunities to manage your money more intentionally.

Lesson 2: Beware of the “it’s only R199” trap

A streaming subscription. A phone upgrade. A payment plan. A buy-now-pay-later purchase. Individually, they may seem manageable. Together, they can quietly consume a large portion of your income. Before committing to any form of credit, look beyond the monthly repayment and understand the full cost. Ask yourself: Will this still feel comfortable if my circumstances change over the next year?

Being money-smart isn’t about never treating yourself. It’s about making your money work harder. Before paying full price, look for ways to stretch your budget through discounts, rewards and loyalty programmes. Whether it’s using platforms like Wysley to find deals or making the most of eBucks rewards and entertainment benefits, small savings can create more room in your budget for the things you enjoy.

Lesson 3: Don’t upgrade your lifestyle every time your salary increases

A raise is worth celebrating. But one of the easiest ways to stay financially stuck is to increase your spending every time your income grows. Maybe it’s a bigger beauty budget. More takeaways. More online shopping. More weekends away. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying your money. The goal is simply to make sure some of that extra income is also working for Future You.

Lesson 4: Success is rarely a solo journey

For many South African women, financial independence doesn’t mean looking after only yourself. It often means helping parents, supporting siblings or contributing towards household expenses. These responsibilities matter. But so does your own future. Finding a balance between supporting the people you love and building your own financial security is one of the most important money lessons you’ll learn.

Lesson 5: Financial confidence is the real flex

Social media can make it seem as though financial success is about what you own. A new car. A luxury handbag. An overseas holiday. But real financial confidence often looks much less glamorous. It’s understanding your payslip. Knowing how credit works. Building an emergency fund. Asking questions before signing a contract. Creating habits that give you more options in the future. For young women looking to build those habits, tools like nav» Youth can provide guidance, budgeting support and practical tools to help turn financial goals into action.

One last thing…

If you’re still figuring things out, you’re not behind. Your 20s are honestly a straight line. There may be career changes, periods of unemployment, side hustles, family responsibilities and unexpected opportunities along the way.

That’s normal. Financial independence isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about building the confidence to make the next good decision, and then the one after that. And sometimes, that’s more than enough.
