Mogale City Launches Transformative Leratong Nodal Development to Redress Spatial Inequalities
Share on FacebookShare on X

Mogale City, 05 June 2025 – In a landmark move for urban transformation, Executive Mayor Lucky Sele officially launched the Leratong Nodal Development, a flagship project designed to reshape Mogale City into an integrated, people-centred urban hub. The launch, held on Thursday, 5 June, was attended by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and MEC for Human Settlement Tasneem Motara, showcasing strong intergovernmental collaboration.

A Vision for Inclusive Growth

The Leratong Node, a mixed-use precinct developed in partnership with Trendville Investments, aims to address historic spatial inequalities while unlocking sustainable economic opportunities for Kagiso and broader Mogale City communities. Strategically located near Leratong Hospital and the Randfontein Road corridor, the project will deliver:

– 15,000 mixed-income housing units

– A 35,000m² regional shopping centre, set to open by November 2026

– Upgraded infrastructure and public amenities

– A new localised economy to benefit residents directly

Mayor Sele emphasised that the project aligns with Mogale City’s spatial vision of equity, redress, and inclusive growth. “This is more than a development—it is a reclaiming of space, dignity, and opportunity for our people,” he stated. “We are building liveable communities where residents can live, work, and thrive, with access to transport, healthcare, and jobs.”

Economic and Social Impact

Beyond infrastructure, the Leratong Nodal Development is expected to create hundreds of jobs, stimulate small business growth, and boost local procurement. The project has already garnered national recognition, with Mogale City named among the top 10 municipalities at the Infrastructure South Africa Thought Leadership Dialogue for its innovative approach to inclusive growth.

Premier Lesufi and MEC Motara praised Mogale City’s leadership for its proactive planning and community-focused approach. “This project exemplifies the power of local government driving transformative change,” said Premier Lesufi.

A New Urban City Centre

Mayor Sele concluded by reaffirming Mogale City’s commitment to bold, inclusive development. “The Leratong Node is not just a project—it is the beginning of a new Urban City Centre,” he declared.
