MEC for Finance and Economic Development Lebogang Maile will on Thursday 20 March 2025 deliver Memorial Lecture on the life of the late Struggle stalwart and fierce Freedom Fighter Mme Winnie Nomzamo Madikizela-Mandela.
The Gauteng Provincial Government, through the Department of Economic Development’s entity – the Constitutional Hill precinct – is hosting the 7th edition of the Human Rights Festival. An annual pilgrimage dedicated to fostering dialogue, creativity and advocacy for justice and equality. Most importantly, a platform showcasing the province’s rich Struggle heritage, tourist attractions and artistic talent. The festival has earned its stripe a serious destination of choice for tourists and literary lovers.
Mme Madikizela-Mandela became one of the first detainees under Section 6 of the notorious Terrorism Act of 1967. Her involvement in the liberation struggle dates to the 50s. she endured the wrath of the Apartheid regime through banning orders and numerous detentions.
Following the dawn of democracy in 94, Madikizela-Mandela became a Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture. Upon leaving parliament and public office, she dedicated her time and energy working with different communities and issue-based organizations, especially around empowerment and developmental initiatives. She continues to hold the deserved title of Mother of the Nation and undisputed champion of South Africa’s poor and vulnerable.
