Youth Day is an annual event that commemorates the invaluable contributions of young people and underscores their pivotal role in shaping the future.

On Youth Day, there are myriad engaging activities that not only bring joy and excitement but also leave a lasting impact on the community. These activities foster unity and responsibility, reminding us of the importance of standing together for common causes. They include volunteer and community service such as clean-up projects, assistance at local shelters, and tree planting, empowering young people to make tangible differences in their communities.
Additionally, art exhibitions showcasing literature related to the Soweto Uprising and sports events like cycling further enrich the day’s offerings. Other thrilling activities such as hiking, surfing, and zip-lining are also popular choices. By participating in these initiatives, we honour the legacy of those who fought for freedom and equality.

Buhle Mnculwane (24) eloquently expresses that Youth Day provides a platform to honour the young lives lost during the Soweto Uprising on June 16, 1976. She emphasizes that by extending a helping hand to those in need and embodying kindness and compassion, young individuals can effect positive change within their communities. Mnculwane astutely identifies unemployment as a major challenge faced by the youth and underscores the transformative power of education in fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Her aspirations to make a positive societal impact are truly inspiring.

Masemola Makobe Kagiso (26) highlights that Youth Day serves as a reminder of the fresh ideas that young individuals bring to society. She emphasizes that young people have the power to create positive change by engaging in community service, advocating for crucial issues, and harnessing technology for social impact. Their unique perspectives and willingness to challenge norms can drive significant transformations. Although Masemola has not directly participated in youth-led initiatives, she has witnessed impactful endeavors spearheaded by young individuals, from environmental conservation projects to social justice campaigns. Their unwavering passion and commitment inspire change and motivate others to take action. Her aspiration is to continually evolve and contribute positively to society by advancing AI technology in ways that benefit humanity, foster collaboration, and uphold ethical standards.

Thoriso Phasha (25) underscores the importance of celebrating Youth Day as a means of honoring the courageous youth who fought for their rights in 1976. She identifies peer pressure as a significant challenge leading many young people to make detrimental choices in order to conform. While Phasha values talent as a pathway to preparing youth for the future, she acknowledges the influence of positive role models like Connie Ferguson, who exemplify resilience and empowerment through their dedicated work.

Nomsa Kunene (27) poignantly articulates the significance of Youth Day in commemorating the bravery of young individuals who stood against oppression. She emphasizes the potential for youth to make meaningful contributions to society through volunteering and community engagement. Kunene astutely identifies mental health, unemployment, lack of education, and abuse as pressing challenges that necessitate access to quality education and employment opportunities. Her admiration for overseas relatives as role models highlights the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping one’s aspirations.

Youth Day serves as a poignant reminder that young people are not just leaders of tomorrow but active agents of change in society today. As we celebrate Youth Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to investing in our youth and collaborating towards building a more inclusive and prosperous world for future generations.
