Few South Africans have occupied the Union Buildings at a more pivotal moment in the country’s democratic journey than Kgalema Motlanthe. On Wednesday 28 October at 21:00 M-Net premieres A conversation with Kgalema Motlanthe, an insightful and reflective television event with one of South Africa’s most respected political figures.
In this exclusive documentary special, Former President Kgalema Motlanthe looks back on the seven months he served as South Africa’s third democratically elected president between 2008 and 2009, a brief but consequential period that helped shape the nation’s future. Drawing on his experiences as a struggle veteran, political leader and head of state, he reflects on leadership, governance and the challenges of steering a country through times of transition.
The candid conversation spans the defining chapters of Kgalema Motlanthe’s life and public service, from his childhood in Alexandra, adult-life in Meadowlands, Soweto and years in the liberation struggle to his imprisonment on Robben Island, leadership in the labour movement, and eventual rise to the Presidency.
Motlanthe shares his views on some of the country’s most pressing contemporary issues, including economic transformation, governance, unemployment, cadre deployment, party politics and the future of South Africa’s democracy. Through thoughtful reflection, historical perspective and personal insight, he offers viewers a rare opportunity to engage with the experiences and ideas of a leader whose influence on modern South Africa continues to resonate.
Hosted by Khaya Sithole, the conversation is guided by one of South Africa’s most respected public commentators. A chartered accountant, academic, broadcaster, writer and political analyst, Sithole is widely recognised for his insightful analysis of public policy, governance and economic issues across television, radio and print media.
More than a discussion about politics, A conversation with Kgalema Motlanthe is a conversation about service, responsibility and the lessons leadership can offer future generations. Against the backdrop of South Africa’s evolving democracy, the special examines the decisions, values and convictions that shape those entrusted with leading a nation.
“Kgalema Motlanthe remains one of the most thoughtful and influential figures in South Africa’s democratic story. This conversation goes beyond politics and headlines to explore leadership, service and the difficult choices that come with governing a nation. Khaya Sithole is the ideal interviewer for this journey, bringing intellectual depth, curiosity and a deep understanding of South Africa’s political landscape. We are proud to bring this important and insightful conversation to M-Net viewers,” says Waldimar Pelser, Director: Premium Channels at MultiChoice, a Canal+ company.
Produced by Idea Candy, with concept, research and consulting by Exordium and development by Picture Cult, and directed by Richard Gregory, the documentary combines historical context, incisive journalism and personal reflection, offering viewers a rare opportunity to hear directly from Kgalema Motlanthe as he reflects on power, service, leadership and the state of South Africa’s democracy.
A conversation with Kgalema Motlanthe premieres Wednesday 28 October at 21:00 on M-Net (DStv channel 101). The special will also be available on Catch Up and DStv Stream. M-Net is now available to more DStv subscribers than ever before on the new Movies & Series package for R500 (same price for both streaming-only and decoder-based subscriptions).
