The Soweto Theatre Youth Orchestra SWTYO is proud to announce their flagship concert, “Chapters of Her”, taking place this August 2026. Leading into its second year since inception, following its groundbreaking official launch in August 2025, this serves as the orchestra’s annual concert where all members take the stage together.
Staged in proud celebration of women’s month, the concert stands as a powerful testament to the theatre’s ongoing mission of youth development, using music, poetry, and storytelling to uplift the next generation of South African performers.

The theme for this year’s flagship event is “Women in Music,” intentionally highlighting an allfemale creative leadership team to guide the performance. In an empowering display of unity and growth, the entire orchestra comprising both male and female musicians aged between 19 and 32 will take the stage together.
“Chapters of Her” takes audiences on a moving musical journey through the lives and legacies of legendary African women who shaped the continent’s musical identity.
The performance features a brand new orchestral arrangement honouring pioneers such as Miriam Makeba, Sophie Mgcina, Sylvia Mdunyelwa, And Dorothy Masuka. Through a blend of Orchestral Music, Spoken Word, and Creative Interpretation, these young musicians will explore the stories, struggles, and triumphs of the matriarchs of African music.
A major media hook for this year’s production is the inclusion of pioneering industry giants who have deeply contributed to the orchestra’s performance. The production prominently features acclaimed jazz pianist Thandi Ntuli alongside trailblazing guest conductor Chevonne Plaatjies famed for her landmark association as a Red Bull conductor. Their handson involvement and mentorship provide an invaluable bridge between generations, allowing youth development beneficiaries to master their craft alongside icons who paved the way.
‘Chapters of Her’ is a celebration of womanhood, heritage, resilience, and artistic excellence,” says Ntombizivumile Qupe, head of youth development. “It is an unmatched opportunity for members of the public, media houses, and arts enthusiasts to witness the incredible growth, skill, and passion of Soweto’s finest young musical minds as they create a legacy of their own.”
Featured artists: Thandi Ntuli, Rorisang Motuba, Nikeziwe Bonga, Nontobeko Hlahla and Chevonne Plaatjies as the conductor.
