The Gauteng Speaker of Legislature, Morakane Mosupyoe, accompanied by Mogale City Executive Mayor, Lucky Sele, kicked started the beginning of school year by visiting the Thuto Pele Secondary School in Kagiso Extension 14, on Wednesday, this week.
The visit which forms the 2025 Back-to-School School Readiness programme saw political entourage including the Gauteng West District Education Director, Jones Rajuili, descending on the school premises to a round of applause from learners and the School Management Team (SMT). The programme is expected to run from 15 January to February.
Thuto Pele Secondary School achieved 94, 5% in the 2024 Matric results, and has in the past years achieved a respectable 100% in three successive years. Making the school one of the best township schools in the West Rand Region.
In her address, Speaker Mosupyoe encouraged the leaners to be focussed in their studies, be exemplary to the community and have the courage to respect the educators and their parents.
“We are truly blessed as politicians to visit your school and share some insight with you on a variety of issues. We are happy that this school made us proud as Gauteng and has produced good results,” Speaker Mosupyoe said.
“However, we want to caution you [learners] that while the principal indicated that the foundation of the school is based on prayer and spirituality, we would like to encourage you to be good leaners and respect both your parents and educators.
“These are your parents in the absence of your biological parents. We also want to implore upon you to concentrate on your education, do your schoolwork and make good choices both in life and on your academic choices. Most importantly, stay away from issues that are meant for adults,” she concluded.
Executive Mayor Sele accompanied by his team of councillors added his words and said: “We are proud as Mogale City leadership to be standing before you and congratulate your school for making as proud with the 2024 Matric Results.
“With education you hold the misticle power to break the shackles of poverty. So, take this education very seriously and make sure that you will complete your Matric at this school with fly colours. We want to congratulate those who came before you [because] they did very well and let us congratulate them with a round of applause.”
The school principal Moses Senyosi was equally happy and thanked the delegation for visiting the school and encouraged the leaners. He also pleaded with the delegation for assistance on matters related to school furniture, sports facilities as well as security.
Director Rajuili applauded the school for making Gauteng province as well as Mogale City and Gauteng West proud. The visit was concluded with the handing over of dignity packs and sanitary towels for both boys’ and girls’ learners.
