SPAR Deepens Engagement to Celebrate Heritage Month

SPAR Deepens Engagement to Celebrate Heritage Month

As South Africa embraces Heritage Month, reflecting on its vibrant tapestry of traditions, SPAR is redoubling its commitment to the communities it serves, solidifying its position as a truly caring and engaged brand.

This month, SPAR continued its partnership with Stokvel Talk at an event that took place in Soweto, Orlando West, where stokvel members and the broader community came together to celebrate unity, culture, and shared prosperity. The event highlights how stokvels contribute not just to financial well-being, but to preserving traditions and strengthening community ties.

Stokvels, have on the hand survived and managed to sustain many families as they do not only provide financial resilience but also cultivate social bonds and empower communities.

“As a community-based retailer, we see stokvels as a powerful expression of unity, trust, and shared prosperity. They stand out as a powerful testament to collective strength to cultivate social bonds and empower individuals and groups across the nation,” says Mpudi Maubane, the SPAR National PR, Communications and Sponsorship Manager. “They reflect how South Africans come together to uplift each other and that is exactly the spirit that guides SPAR. Whether it’s through affordable essentials, supporting small entrepreneurs, we are committed to being more than just a retailer. We are a partner in building stronger communities.”

Making shopping affordable and accessible

Although food inflation has decreased, non-food items still burden consumers, especially those in low- to middle- income brackets. Electricity prices have increased by 68% over the past five years, according to the Competition Commission’s Cost of Living Report, published earlier in September. Water tariffs rose by 50% in the same period, surpassing the overall inflation rate of 28%.

To soften the impact, SPAR continues to invest in its private label range, providing shoppers with quality everyday groceries at highly competitive prices. This is especially important for stokvel groups who pool resources to buy in bulk, as the savings are increased when combined with SPAR’s exclusive monthly promotions and discounts offered through the SPAR Rewards Card.

Creating opportunities in underserved communities

SPAR has consistently championed the role of small businesses and local entrepreneurs in driving growth and inclusion. By partnering with delivery start-ups and supporting informal sector innovations, SPAR is creating a virtuous cycle of opportunity that includes empowering small businesses, generating employment, and contributing to poverty alleviation. Approximately 90% of SPAR’s private-label products are sourced locally.

As part of our Heritage highlight, we are excited to share news that underscores our deep and long-standing connection with women across South Africa. Just a few weeks ago, we proudly bid farewell to the SPAR Baby Proteas – a group of exceptional young women who are now in Gibraltar for the Youth Netball World Cup.

Our commitment to empowering women is a legacy that stretches far back, more than two decades. Long before netball in the country gained widespread international recognition, we championed this dynamic sport, which has historically uplifted and empowered countless women. This support for women is currently mirrored in our current initiatives, such as supporting stokvels.

“These important community structures, predominantly driven by women serve as a powerful tool for economic resilience and social cohesion. As we celebrate Heritage Month and our ongoing partnership with Stokvel Talk, we are reminded that our strength lies in the community. We believe that by supporting these kind of initiatives and encouraging smart financial practices, like utilizing the SPAR Rewards Card as a powerful savings and household management tool, we are collectively writing a chapter of financial independence and shared prosperity across the nation,” concludes Maubane.

Through its ongoing initiatives, SPAR demonstrates that its heritage is deeply connected with that of South Africa: one of resilience, unity, and shared growth.
