The former Speaker of Council Lucky Sele was on Friday, this week, 25 October 2024, appointed the new executive mayor of Mogale City Local Municipality, in the West Rand during 39th Special Council Meeting.
Sele ascended to the executive mayoral seat after African Transformation Movement (ATM) sole councillor in Mogale City, Danny Thupane, resigned last week, 16 October 2024, and a vacancy was announced. The sitting was held at the City’s Centenary Hall
Sele contested the position against the DA’s former mayor Tyrone Gray, who was voted out together with his Chief Whip, Lesego Lekoto and Speaker Jacqueline Pannal, through a motion of no confidence last year on 20 April 2024.
Sele received 43 votes against 25 of the DA’s Gray with Steenkamp getting a paltry 5.
Council also elected the new Speaker of Council after a vacancy was announced after Sele was elected the new executive mayor. Dorren David, who was the Finance Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) was elected the Speaker of Council unopposed.
In his acceptance speech, Sele outlined an exciting speech that sought to address issues ranging from ‘unemployment, water and sewage crisis, township and urban renewal, service delivery issues plaguing Mogale City’, among others.
He also announced the new Members of the Mayoral Committee comprising of the councillors from the ANC and EFF.
The new members of the committee are, EFF councillors Kholeka Mandyu, Wonderful Segolodi, Xolile Mkruquli and John Koboekae holding, Corporate Support Service, Health and Social Development, Environment and Roads and Transport, respectively.
While ANC councillors Francis Makgatho – Public Safety, Victor Molefe, Lwando Resha, Merriam Mogoje, Cynthia Mankazana and Peter Modise assuming executive portfolios, Finance, Economic Development, Human Settlement and Real Estate, Sports and Recreation and Utilities Management Services (UMS), correspondingly.
