Mogale City Executive Mayor Danny Thupane tendered a letter of notice to resign in a letter dated the 15th October 2024. The letter was officially read by the Speaker of Council, Councillor Lucky Sele at the 10th Ordinary Council Meeting held at the City’s Council Chamber, on Wednesday, 16th October 2024.
The resignation of the Executive Mayor Thupane therefore meant that his motion of no confidence was withdrawn. Thupane a lone member of the African Transformation Movement (ATM) in Council, formed part of the Government of Local Unity (GLU) after a Motion of no confidence passed on the DA’s Troika, former Executive Mayor, Councillor Tyrone Gray, Speaker of Council, Jacqueline Pannal and Lesego Lekoto, the Single Whip of Council.
The Mayoral Executive Committee referred as the Mayoral Committee also got dissolved as the result of the resignation, and the new members will be announced by the newly elected Executive Mayor.
The Executive Mayor’s resignation will take effect as of the 21st October 2024 and Speaker will have to convene Council within seven (7) days to fill in the Executive Mayor’s vacancy. In the letter, the Executive Mayor, thanked the ANC and EFF, the coalition partners in the GLU people of Mogale City to have serve them for the past 19 months.
Thupane said he wished he could have done more but the system had its limitations. He also thanked the Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMC’s)as well as the staff of the municipality for their support, professionalism and service. He further thanks the ANC and the EEF for their continued support and cooperation throughout his tenure as the Executive Mayor.
The day’s proceedings moved to a higher gear and got heated when Motions of no confidence on Speaker and the Single Whip of Council, Councillor Lucky Selle and Tsholofelo Ramaisa respectively were read.
The DA supported by the Freedom Front plus (FF+) pushed for the Motion of no confidence on the Single Whip of Council to be heard and undertaken, as the motion was rejected and withdrawn in the previous Council Sitting due the unavailability of Councillor Ramaisa.
The dual-partied alliance formed by the DA and the FF+ did not allow Councillor Sele a breather as they also pushed for motion as he was perceived to have protected Councillor Ramaisa’s motion to be withdrawn and heard. After a protracted discussions and debates on the motions, the house was divided and all parties forming Council voted. The two motions fell flat and Councillors Sele and Ramaisa retained their positions with 28 votes in favour of the motions and 41 against. The ANC was supported by the EFF, ATM, PAC, IFP while ACDP abstained from voting.
