Established in 1997, Dora’s Ark in Roodepoort initially started as a community project focused on providing food to those in need. Over time, the project transitioned into a children’s home under the dedicated leadership of Mam Thembi Hadebe and her assistant manager Lucky Maseona. Their primary goal is to offer a secure and nurturing environment for vulnerable children who require protection and care.
Located in a former public library space generously provided by a local councillor, Dora’s Ark currently shelters forty-three children, with plans underway to expand their capacity to support even more children in need. Despite facing challenges with inconsistent sponsors, Mam Thembi’s unwavering commitment ensures that the home remains a safe haven for all children, including those with disabilities, thanks to the steadfast support of her devoted team and the community.
With a staff of ten members ensuring the smooth operation of the home, Dora’s Ark is focused on its future goal of expanding its reach to serve a larger number of vulnerable children while continuing to be a beacon of hope for youth in the area. The organization relies on the power of prayer and the generosity of the community to sustain its operations. Education is considered a vital component of success at Dora’s Ark, and they ensure that each child under their care receives access to schooling.
