Mandela Day falls on a Saturday this year, and we couldn’t think of a better way to honour Madiba’s legacy than hosting a work party at Braamfontein Cemetery! City Parks has done the heavy lifting clearing trees and branches damaged by massive storms earlier this year. JHF and Friends of Johannesburg Cemeteries are now stepping in to tackle the finer details. We’ll be clearing smaller debris/branches in the storm-damaged section and cleaning historic headstones as we go.
Join us from 8:30 onwards for your 67 minutes, or stay for the morning. After the hard work is done, we’ll be hosting our traditional braai and picnic to relax and catch up. Pack your own picnic basket, braai goodies and drinks, and a table and chairs if you need. We expect to finish by 13:30 but feel free to stay on after if you wish.
Please remember to bring:
• Tools: If you have them, please bring garden rakes, secateurs, pruning shears, or stiff brushes/rags for cleaning headstones.
• Gear: Sturdy, closed shoes are a must! Don’t forget your gardening gloves, a sun hat, and sunscreen.
• Refreshments: Plenty of drinking water to stay hydrated while you work.Parking & security:
• Safe parking is available just inside the main entrance gate on Graf Street.
• Security will be on-site to ensure peace of mind while we work.Bring your energy, your helping hands, and your family. Let’s make a tangible difference to Joburg’s heritage together!
