19-year-old cabin crew student Charity Mutavhatshindi from Chiawelo, Soweto is still reveling in her win after her family spaza shop received a R50 000 makeover from Knorrox as part of thebrand’s Biiig Wins competition earlier this year.

She shares the moment she was informed about her win, “I won’t forget that day. After I received the call from Knorrox, I immediately called my mom and dad. They thought I was joking!

”The renovations included refurbishing the shelves, the flooring and repainting the interior and exterior walls.

“Previously there was a leak on the spaza shop roof and the floors were badly damaged. Since the renovations I see now, I have more customers than earlier this year.”

The Biiig Wins competition also rewarded 200 consumers with a R5 000 cash prize each and 2000 consumers with airtime vouchers.

“We know that consumers are tightening their belts because of the delicate economy we find ourselves in. We wanted to let our customers know that we care for them and to give back to them during this challenging time and are pleased that the grand prize has gone to such a deserving family. In future, we hope that we can give away more meaningful prizes such as these prizes with long term benefits”, says the Marketing Manager, Thobeka Goba.

Spaza shops are prevalecnt in South African townships and contribute to many household incomes with over 150 000 in existence in the country according to research by Trade Intelligence.

Charity advocates for the adoption of such stores as an antidote for the high rates of unemployment in the country. “I’m following in my dad’s footsteps [because] we are living in a very jobless place. I encourage those who want to run their own business to try a spaza shop.”
