Valentine’s Day and the month of love

As February is the month of love, we are enveloped in the enchanting spirit of Valentine’s Day, a celebration that carries a heartfelt message of love and connection. In the year 2025, there’s prompts discussions about the roles of giving and receiving in relationships. However, regardless of traditional expectations, Valentine’s Day serves as a poignant reminder to pause and appreciate the beauty of love. It extends an invitation to cherish, express, and value love in all its forms.

Thandeka Nyathi (22) expressed her view that women should take the opportunity to show their romantic side by spoiling their partners with gifts. She emphasized that gifts are an integral part of Valentine’s Day and that the thought behind the gift matters more than its size. Linda Maseko (24) echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that love is a two-way street, and both partners should exchange gifts as a symbol of their affection. She shared her personal experience of enjoying buying gifts for her boyfriend as a way of expressing her love and appreciation.

Angel Gumbo (20) held a different perspective, suggesting that men should continue to take the lead in gift-giving as a way to demonstrate their affection for their female companions. However, she acknowledged that if a man regularly gives gifts to his partner, a specific gift on Valentine’s Day may not be crucial.

Amidst these diverse viewpoints, it is important to recognize the enduring significance of Valentine’s Day and the multitude of ways in which love enriches our lives. As we eagerly embrace the traditions of this celebration, let us remember that love has the power to foster compassion, understanding, and unity in our world.

Thulisa Nyathi
