In a heartwarming ceremony at Ubuntu Kraal, Orlando West, Soweto on 16 January 2025, Ward 39 Counsellor Lefa Molise honored the top 40 matriculants from schools in his ward, handing over the prestigious award certificates of merit with trophies, and further recognizing their hard work and dedication towards academic excellence.

The event brought together learners, parents, and various stakeholders, including local businesses, organizations, and community leaders. The top 10 learners from each school – Orlando West High, Phefeni Senior Secondary School, Emadwaleni High, and St. Martin – received awards of achievement, symbolizing their outstanding performance.

A special guest and resident of Ward 39 Paballo Mootle, who attended school at Letsibogo Girls Secondary School, was also honored and received an award. Although she did not attend a high school in Ward 39, her achievement was recognized and celebrated by the community.

Mrs. Lebogang Nkwadi, Chief Executive Officer of Khaabo Tombstones, was a notable guest at the ceremony, handing out awards to the deserving learners. She shared inspiring words, emphasizing that “everything is possible when you put your mind to it.” Mrs. Nkwadi’s own success story served as a testament to her words, having grown her business from a small startup with her husband to a thriving enterprise with over 100 employees.

Counsellor Molise emphasized the importance of community recognition. He stated. “When we grew up, passing matric was the end of it, nobody celebrated with you. That is why we facilitated to celebrate with these learners, to show them that the community loves and supports them.” He encouraged the learners to continue striving for excellence, wishing them well in their future endeavors.

The ceremony showcased the power of community collaboration, with various stakeholders participating, including Khabo Tombstones, Kongcrete Jungle, Ubuntu Kraal, Vilakats, Chatall Business College, Each One Teach One, ANC Youth League, RR Business Projects, Orlando SAPS, and Sector 4 CPF. Local businesses offered opportunities for learners, including internships and job placements.

As the learners received their awards, accompanied by their proud parents, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and gratitude. This initiative serves as a shining example of community-led recognition and support for academic excellence.

In addition to the awards ceremony, the event highlighted the importance of community involvement in education. By acknowledging and rewarding outstanding academic achievement, Ward 39 demonstrated its commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders and change-makers.
