In a commendable effort to restore the beauty and pride of Bulawayo, resident Zwoluga Moyo has launched an ambitious initiative known as the “Hand That Gives Clean-Up Campaign.” This campaign aims to tackle litter and waste on the city’s streets, addressing pressing environmental concerns and public health risks that impact the community. By promoting proper waste disposal and recycling practices, the campaign seeks to enhance community health and environmental conditions while raising awareness about the importance of conservation and encouraging active participation in environmental initiatives.
Launched in 2024, the campaign kicked off with its first event on February 10th, followed by another on November 30th. Through these efforts, Zwoluga envisions a significant reduction in waste and litter in public spaces, increased awareness of effective waste management, and the creation of job opportunities for youth and women within the recycling and waste management sectors. All collected litter is responsibly disposed of through the city council’s waste management system.
The campaign emphasizes that everyone has a role in maintaining a clean and healthy environment, encouraging individuals to take ownership of their surroundings and collaborate towards a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future. Community members are invited to participate by volunteering for clean-up events, donating resources such as gloves, trash bags, and refreshments, and spreading the word to inspire others to join.
Zwoluga has partnered with the Bulawayo City Council, GreenHut Trust, and Wezesha Industries to strengthen the clean-up efforts. She welcomes participation from other organizations, community groups, and individuals who share a commitment to environmental conservation. However, she acknowledges challenges such as limited resources and funding, coordinating efforts among various stakeholders, and effectively raising awareness to encourage community involvement.
Looking ahead, Zwoluga’s long-term goals for the clean-up campaign include establishing a sustainable waste management system in Bulawayo and creating ongoing employment opportunities for youth and women through recycling initiatives. She encourages community members to remain engaged by participating in future clean-up events, providing ongoing support and resources, and offering feedback on ways to enhance the campaign’s effectiveness. Although she is uncertain when the next cleanup will take place, she hopes to hold several campaigns throughout the year to keep Bulawayo clean and vibrant.
