It is important that we put in mind that depression is a common illness as it affects millions of individuals, including people in our close circles. You may not realize that they face similar common challenges such as emotional obstacles. There are small steps and strategies that can be put into motion for an individual to improve their mental health situation.
Every day is different which means that where you are presently is not a place where you’ll always be. The key to self-treatment of a depression is to be open, accepting and loving towards yourself and understanding what you are going through. If you feel that you cannot cope anymore then it is time that you may need to talk to someone.
Consider writing about what you’re experiencing with your emotions, how you feeling whether positive or negative as these activities augur well for self healing. Today’s moods, thoughts or emotions do not belong to tomorrow! If today’s goals were not met, then there is a new opportunity for tomorrow. Some days will be difficult and some great!
Depression can tinge a recollection of negative emotions. You may find yourself focussing on the one thing that went wrong instead of the many things that went right. Stop generalizing and push yourself to recognize the good! The negative voice in your head may talk you out of self-help. If you can learn to recognize it, then you can learn to replace it. Don’t listen to the voice that says “you’re not worth anything,” “you’ll never amount to anything,” or “you’re not good enough.”Rather replace these words in your head with positive thoughts.
Take time to reward yourself after achieving each goal in your life. The memory of a job well done is very powerful over negative talk. Set for yourself daily tasks and do something that you really enjoy and measure your achievements. It could be arranging decorations, painting, baking, gardening, etc. These activities can uplift your mood and impel positive energy that can help you overcome your depression symptoms.
Spend time with your loved ones. Depression can lead you to isolate yourself leading one to withdraw from friends, family, or associates but constant physical contact time can help you rid yourself from such tendencies.
Alternatively make a phone call, or video call. Try something entirely new. When you do the same thing over and over you use the same part of your brain, so challenge your neurons by doing something entirely different.
Research shows that doing new things can improve your overall well being and strengthen your social relationships. Consider trying a new sport, taking a creative class, a new cooking technique, or anything you love doing.
Volunteering can be a great way to release stress and depression. By doing something new with other people such as offering one’s time to do good to someone or something.
If you are feeling down you’re always going to feel better when you assist another person! Which in turn presents a boost to your mental health and a satisfying feeling of contentment.
Find relaxation techniques that can help you lower stress and invite more joy and balance into your day. Write down the points about what makes you feel good, and write notes to others as something meaningful. What you eat and drink can also have an effect of how you feel.
