The new appointed MEC for eGovernment in Gauteng Bonginkosi Dlamini is hitting the ground running when he switched on the Wireless Fidelity (WIFI) for the community of Kromdraai in Mogale City, West Rand.
Dlamini accompanied by Mogale City Executive Mayor Danny Thupane, switched of the WIFI and donated spots apparels to the local soccer and netball teams at an event held at the Kromdraai Portion 26 Sports grounds over the weekend.
The switching on and connections were done at the local library, where the WIFI tower is located. The WIFI connectivity and radius covers a distance of more than 60 meters away from the tower. The nearby local Matla Combined School, which is 1,2 kilometres away from the tower also has a microwave dish of which learners and local community members can has access to the WIFI.
The library will also get 10 tablets from the department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
Addressing the community and the sports enthusiast on behalf of the Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Dlamini said the community need to look and protect the infrastructure from criminals.
“We as the Gauteng government we are very much happy that new are now connecting the community of the WIFI. Everyone is very much depended on technology and the connectivity to the WIFI is as important as your basic service delivery needs,” Dlamini said.
He also indicated that his department will also roll out the connectivity to hospitals as well as the clinics across the province.
To top up the switch on, Dlamini donated sports kits to four netball and soccer teams, much to the appreciation of the audiences.
Mayor Thupane added his voice and said: “These initiatives form part of our government of local unity, comprising of the ANC, EFF and the ATM, that we took a conscious decision at our council sittings that we are going to serve our communities to the best of our ability.
“During the week on Mandela Day we also donated dignity packs, school bags as well as school shoes to needy learners of Matla Combined School, which is also connected to the WIFI infrastructure.”
Last month in June, the re-elected Lesufi and Thupane also switched on electricity to 267 households in the same area of Portions 26.
Dlamini of the IFP is one of the newly elected MEC after Lesufi announced his new members of the Executive Council (MECs) after uncertainty and two abrupt postponements.
